Hi,

and welcome to the 2nd edition of the Shane Global Student Zone E-newsletter. We had a good response to last months newsletter and we were pleasantly surprised at how many students both past and present from Shane Global found it useful, interesting, and responded back to us by email. Keep it up! We would like to hear from you, and we are always interested in knowing what you are doing once you have left Shane. We hope you enjoy this month’s edition and find it useful. As usual if you have any suggestions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

2. Country Fact File - London

Every month we will have a little feature on a different country’s capitol city. As we have so many international students from different parts of the world, it is good to get to know a little about other students countries, where they are from, their culture and exciting and boring things about their country. Since we are in London, we decided to start with England. So here are 10 interesting facts about London that you may not have known.

  • London is the biggest city in Britain and in Europe.
  • London occupies over 620 square miles
  • London has a population of 7,172,036 (2001)
  • About 12 per cent of Britain’s overall population live in London
  • London has the highest population density in Britain, with 4,699 people per square kilometre,
  • London is in the southeast of England.
  • London is the seat of central government in Britain.
  • The tallest building in London is the Canary Wharf Tower.
  • London was the first city in the world to have an underground railway, known as the 'Tube'.
  • Some of the most important people from countries all over the world visit the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
  • There are over 100 theatres in London, including 50 in the West End. London theatre accounts for 45% of all UK theatre admissions and over 70% of box-office revenues.

3. How to find a job

  • What You Need to Get an International Work Visa

In many cases, you need a job offer in another country before that government will issue you a work visa. To get to that country and find a job, you'll need to do some travel planning and get a passport. You will also need a letter from your future employer eventually -- best if you get that letter before you leave home. It can help if you have a physical address in your destination country, too.

  • Working Abroad as a Volunteer

Most credible volunteer programs have permission to use volunteer workers in the countries in which work is being done. As long as you're being paid by the volunteer outfit (payment includes any money the company gives you, like a Peace Corps housing stipend) and not by a resident of the country, you needn't worry about having a work permit. If you're not being paid at all (and with most volunteer programs, you are actually paying the company for the privilege of volunteering), a work visa is not an issue.

4. Student profile - Rosa

What do you like best about Shane schools?

What I like best is the way of teaching. It is very personal and the teachers are very nice. Moreover, being at Shane allowed me to know a lot of students and to talk with them.

What do you like about being in London?

This city is very nice and the people too, they are friendly. Even if the weather is not always good, you can do a lot of things in London, you can`t be bored here and I like that, it`s the opposite of my city.

What do you think about Shane schools student services?

I think that the student services are very cool. When you have a problem, they always help you, in all the problems you could have.

Have you joined the `refer a friend for £100 campaign` yet?

No.

Would you recommend others to Shane schools?

Yes, of course. I will recommend Shane for all the people who would like to improve their English and who would like a school in the centre of London.

How is the atmosphere in the classroom?

It depends on the class, when you are in an high level it`s quite serious but in all the classes you can talk about everything and it`s another great way to study.

Have you ever joined a social programm and if yes, how was your experience?

Yes, I joined a social program and I liked it. We went to a cocktail bar and so many other places. It`s very cool and it`s nice to study in another context.
