Your First Day at School

Perhaps you feel nervous about your first day. Please read the following questions to make you feel more relaxed.

What happens on my first day?

Reception staff will welcome you, check your documents (passport/ID card), and give you instructions on where to go for your level test.

This test is to assess the best class for you. Visa students may have already taken the written test. If so, you will only have to do a short oral test to check your spoken ability.

The testing and placement process takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

After the test:

• We will give you information about your class level with the name of your teacher and classroom.
• The Director/Director of Studies will talk to you about the school.
• We will give you some information about what to expect in your family and the country/city you will be studying in etc.
• We will show you around the school and you will see where the important things are (Study centre, classrooms, toilets etc.).
• Usually, you should start your first class by 11.00am on the Monday.
• For most students, your lessons on Tuesday will begin at 09.00am. Please check with the teachers when you receive your timetable
• If, after your Tuesday class, you are unhappy with the level you have been placed in, please speak to your teacher who will assess whether you need to change class.

How will I get to school on the first day?

You will make your own way to school. Your host family will tell you the best way to school but for students in London, you may want to look at one of the transport maps on http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/tube-dlr-trams-and-train-travelcard-zones-map.pdf before you arrive.

 What time should I arrive at school?

Please try to arrive at 09.00am for orientation and placement test.

What do I have to bring?

Please bring:

• Your passport or European ID card. We must take a photocopy for our school records.
• Your certificate of enrolment
• Paper and a pen
• Money for your lunch. (about £5)
